HOW DO I REMOVE CONTACTS FROM IPHONE THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN DELETED?

Hello: I goal this creates sense. I deleted a lot of contacts from my iphone hit list but when I went to send an email, they were still there. Meaning, if I press the minute “A” all contacts come up which begin with “A” even yet they have been no longer in my contact/address list. Can any one discuss it me how can I get remove the already deleted conacts them from my email hit list? Hope this creates sense.
